Prince Edward Island Established 1937 22 sq km/5,440 acres   Prince Edward Island National Park spans a spectacular stretch of land encompassing sand dunes, salt marshes, remnants of an Acadian forest, coastal headlands, beaches, and sandstone cliffs. This is the land that inspired Lucy Maud Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables and prompted an oil tycoon to build an elegant Victorian home. Both Green Gables and Dalvay-by-the Sea are national treasures and showcased within the park.   Approximately 285 million years ago, a mountain chain existed in this region. Over time, its rivers deposited gravel, silt, and sand into a low-lying basin forming sandstone bedrock. As the glaciers retreated, Prince Edward Island gradually took shape.   Situated on the central north shore of Prince Edward Island, the park faces the Gulf of St. Lawrence, where sunsets are storybook perfect. Although one of the smallest parks in Canada, it’s a popular destination, with famous beaches and outstanding coastal landscapes. The other attraction is the lure of Lucy Maud Montgomery through her beloved 1908 novel, Anne of Green Gables.   The park’s ecosystems support a variety of animal species and 400 different species of plants. Although there are no deer or moose on the island, coyotes, red foxes, raccoons, beavers, mink, and weasels are common. With more than 300 species of birds, including the endangered piping plover, the park plays a significant role in shorebird migration in spring and fall.   In 1998, the park expanded to include 4 sq km (990 acres) on the Greenwich Peninsula where rare, U-shaped dunes known as parabolic dunes are located. This is also the region where archaeological digs revealed that Paleo-Indians lived here 10,000 years ago. Evidence indicates that Mi’kmaq, French, Acadian, Scottish, Irish, and English were also early settlers here.   The park is bordered by a number of traditional farming and fishing communities, which adds to the cul- tural fabric of the island and enhances the visitor’s experience.

This guide is very mediocre/average at best. I also own the Nat Geo guide to national parks of the US, which is phenomenal. The one for Canada, however, pales in comparison. The information provided is very basic and does not provide enough detail to plan a national parks trip. The other guide is well researched and has meticulously planned itineraries, highlighting various stops and providing great detail. This one has a few sections that don't quite make "geographic sense" (Ex: there are stops on a scenic drive provided in random order, rather than the order in which they appear), has descriptions that are copied from websites that come up with a basic Google search, and is just missing a lot of major sites. I was very disappointed as I was hoping for the book to serve as a sort of "best of" resource for the parks like the US one.

Rather disappointing. Maybe it is not possible to cover all of Canada's many parks in a single book, but the coverage in this book is very superficial, omitting many of the key features of the parks. For instance, the section on Jasper Park does not even mention Athabasca Falls or Sunwapta Falls, two of the best and most visited attractions. This book might be helpful in learning what parks are available in Canada, but should be supplemented by more specific guides to actually plan a park visit.

Interesting overview of several of Canada's national parks. The pictures made me want to learn more. This book is good for preliminary trip planning and armchair travel--a lot of additional research will be needed before my trip.

A must have if you camp out. great book, descriptions, directions and all sorts of information. Helped us to decide where to go.

Great inspiration for our camping trip across Canada

This is an informative book about the Canadian national parks, including park, travel, food and lodging info. This book opens the door to the less visited and more remote places of our northern neighbor. I wish it comes with a larger folded map of the Canadian national park system.

This is a great book. It contains a lot of information for a person who previously knew nothing about the national parks of Canada. There are some deficiencies (as are pointed out by other reviewers), but overall the book is a great read, a great reference, and in my opinion a must-have for any road trip to Canada.
