After a summer of light reading I wanted something more demanding. I think I first came across a review of Jon Meacham's biography of George H. W. Bush in the Economist. I've read a number of biographies recently that I have found quite disappointing in their appraisal of their subject. So I approached this one with interest but also some trepidation. This is a big book. A very big book. The pure content is 500+ pages. So be prepared for a lot of reading. It should be a matter of pride for Jon Meacham that he could keep a reader interested in the subject. Now George H. W. Bush led a fascinating life. His background was wealthy, he served in the Navy during World War II, ran his own business in Texas and was a successful politician. During all of these phases in his life he seems to have maintained his own moral code, graciousness and steely ambition. This account is fair and balanced. I did feel that the author genuinely liked his subject personally but also covered his faults and mistakes very well. This is refreshing and moves this book beyond the pointless hagiography of a lot of recent biographies. I'say this is a model book covering an interesting subject whose life and presidency is rightly being re-evalued. A politician who wants to govern for the whole country without being a slave to ideology; how refreshing.

Jon Meacham's treatment of Bush's life was very well done. Bush is one of those Presidents who flew under the radar. That was based on his personality and quiet style. One of the biggest things that struck me, in light of where we are politically and with our current President (writing this review in Fall of 2017), is what a class act he was. I knew that and remember it, but reading about him was a good reminder. Bush served at the period that I think of as the end of civility, compromise and progress in politics. Right at the crest of where the left chose to not listen to or work with the right, and vice-versa. The beginning of the broken system we now have. We follow Bush from his childhood, WWII service, his career in business and the into public service. The story is very well paced and was an easy read, while also being very in-depth. It also revealed a George Bush that I never really knew, except through his guarded public persona. What we see is a genuine person, and one who had a real sense of duty and a deep compassion for people. We also see a person who was singularly driven and focused on attaining the ultimate prize in American politics. And what's striking about that ambition is that he did it without the ugliness that we see in today's political creatures. Overall, this is one of the better Presidential biographies I've read. And it was a great reminder that, yes, someone who can earn one's respect through their actions and how they treat others - not take that respect for granted simply by the office they hold - can rise to the office of President of the United States.

I am an avid reader of presidential biographies, but there are two aspects of them I try to avoid: 1) overly lengthy ones; and 2) ones that focus on a president's entire life, rather than on his years as president. Destiny and Power fails this test on both counts, and yet I give it 5 out of 5 stars. Here's why:The subject, George H.W. Bush, represents a spectacularly accomplished life, whose non-presidential years involves importantly related roles, such as CIA Director, presidential contender, and Vice President. The author, Jon Meacham, keeps the reader interested as he weaves through Bush's life in a whopping 601 pages of text. Some pan the book as "hagiography," but biographers generally have a sincere interest in their subject and tend to write from a positive perspective. Nonetheless, to the extent that Meacham treats Bush favorably, he does so less for political/ideological reasons and more based on Bush's character as a person and patriot. There will always be detractors of every president; it comes with the territory. But for those who can also find good in every president, and be thankful and appreciative for the accomplishments, Destiny and Power is worth the time invested in completing it. And for collectors of presidential volumes, one would be hard-pressed to call a collection of the elder Bush complete without this tome.
