I just finished the book, The Salt Fix by James DiNicolantonio.Well worth the read.As a prevention and wellness family physician who prides himself in looking deeper at cause and effect in healthcare, I must admit that I had my blinders on when it came to salt. I too believed that salt was to be watched closely and tried to remain at the lowest recommended usage. Well, no longer! The author James DiNicolantonio makes a great case as to why limiting your salt to the national guidelines may be BAD for your health.In my practice, I have different views than mainstream medicine in many areas of health and wellness. Why? Well, I have arrived at the point in my career when I am not afraid to ask the “experts”- “WHY?”.Why is fat bad?Why is cholesterol bad?Do cholesterol lowering drugs really save lives?I like to dive deeply into cause and effect. But it appears like I did not look closely enough at how the human body uses salt. I was still advising people to watch their salt intake as I thought that the dietary recommendations were set in stone with irrefutable evidence.Well…….Let me add one more question for the “experts”.Why is consuming more than 2 grams of salt a day bad?After reading The Salt Fix, I am disappointed in myself but that changes today. The author James DiNicolantonio very simply makes the case that the war on salt is as misguided as I believe the war on cholesterol and fat has been. He points out how salt is a vital nutrient that our body needs to stay in balance, just like fat and cholesterol. He clearly and simply shows how our body responds to different levels of salt intake.He brings together many other aspects of my practice, writing about how it is not salt, but that other white processed powder, SUGAR, that is really the issue in most people with metabolic health issues. He points out how sugar can cause insulin resistance leading to Obesity, High Blood Pressure, Diabetes, Heart Disease, etc, etc. He then shows how too LITTLE salt also leads to insulin resistance, Obesity, High Blood Pressure, Diabetes, Heart Disease, etc, etc. See the twist?Besides learning about the many beneficial aspects of salt, this book should make you a more skeptical thinker when it comes to national dietary guidelines. You should ask yourself, “Is there real proof that these guidelines are good for my health AND were these guidelines based on real medical studies or are they a dietary or political/industry power play?If you are overweight, have High Blood Pressure, Diabetes, Thyroid Disease, or Kidney Disease, BUY THIS BOOK and READ IT. If you like salt but are afraid to use it, BUY THIS BOOK and READ IT. Then have a conversation with your physician(s). If they just restate the National Dietary Salt guidelines without understanding the true data, lend them this book, or buy them one so they can refer to it and help more patients.

We live in interesting times. In 1980, the first "Dietary Guidelines for Americans" were published, and we're now seeing the results.Along with most Americans, I assumed those guidelines were rooted in solid science, and I tried to adhere. I ate a lot of carbs -- the base of the food pyramid. I avoided eggs because of cholesterol. I avoided fat because of caloric density. And I avoided salt to avoid high blood pressure.To say those guidelines didn't work for me would be an understatement. I won't bore you with the details, but I improved my health by essentially doing the opposite of those guidelines. Salt was the last of that dogma to be purged from my brain.I got on the high-salt bandwagon a couple years ago when I saw how it "cured" my occasional headaches, fatigue, and light-headedness -- all symptoms of low blood volume. My exercise performance also improved.Dr. DiNicolantonio clearly explains the mechanisms of sodium regulation. It's not a simple matter of sodium intake increasing blood pressure. The body is very good at regulating homeostatic levels of sodium, and if intake is too low, your body has several tricks to compensate -- including vasoconstriction to compensate for low blood volume. In effect, following the low-salt guidelines can increase blood pressure and make you feel like crap.DiNicolantonio also tells a compelling story of salt in an evolutionary context, especially for those with European ancestry.And he tells us how the guidelines went wrong.Frankly, I was skeptical for a long time. I just couldn't believe that science could fail us for 40 years. I had faith in science.To me, it's sad that this book is necessary, but I'm glad somebody has finally written this book. It needed to be written, and it's another milestone. Hopefully, this marks the point at which nutritional science starts getting it right.

This was a wonderful book that I absolutely couldn't put down. I live in Pittsburgh and have been to all of the sites discussed in the book but, more importantly, the author wrote a seamless story intertwining history and fiction to tell the story of a fascinating man who gave so much to the world. I am now inspired to read even more about Andrew Carnegie and the history of steel making in our country and in Pittsburgh specifically.I am an avid reader of historical fiction and believe that I have learned a great deal from reading books like Carnegie's Maid and highly recommend it to others who like a little fiction mixed into well researched history.

Perhaps a very Pittsburgh book, too -- right down to foregoing love in favor of duty, and love transmuting into ideals.When I was a child in Pittsburgh, the main Carnegie Library was a temple to learning -- no expense spared in its majestic construction and every book cherished, no matter how obscure. I used to make the series of trolley journeys from my suburban home to the university district to visit it every other weekend, just because it amazed me that I was welcome in such a palatial and scholarly environment -- everyone was. It was its sheer magnificence that began my fasciation with Andrew Carnegie. I also adored Pittsburgh -- a very complex place, for those of you who don't know it.So of course I wanted to read this book, and that side of me was gratified to come away with a better understanding of the young Carnegie and Pittsburgh in the time of the Civil War -- with an intriguing description of New York in the same time period thrown in.This book is not a literary masterpiece, but it is competently written from the POV of a ladies' maid -- a narrow view of the world, but one which serves the purposes of the book very nicely. The characters took on reality for me, and the small domestic view of some of the great robber-baron moves of the day, and of the building of the country's infrastructure, was engrossing. So was the description of the living conditions of laboring-class immigrants and Irish tenant farmers during the time of the great potato famine, which came to vivid life. And the story arc was quite satisfying -- and the farthest thing imaginable from predictable. I'll be re-reading this book in future.

The whole book seems contrived to show that a (fictional) young woman made Carnegie a great philanthropist, although he'd already decided to be one at a young age. It's also a bit boring.I realize that being a servant in the 19th century was miserable work, but how many times must we read that Clara brushes Mrs. Carnegie's hair 200 strokes at night and rubs in rosewater lotion and buffs her nails? Darns her silk stockings? A servant's work was certainly repetitious, but the writing doesn't need to be. I felt as though the author just copy-pasted those passages in as filler.Similarly, all the details that Clara instantly grasped about the insider trading and M&A activity among robber barons was too technical for my entertainment. One of Clara's big victories in the books is when she suggests to Carnegie that he sue for patent violation. A modern female lawyer (such as the author) might think of that. There's no way a simple Irish girl would have heard of it - I don't care how many poetry books her father somehow found for her to read. That's the lawyer talking, not the Irish maid.I did leave wanting to read a good, non-fictional bio of Carnegie. His life story must be fascinating. Why did he live with his mother until his 50s and only marry after her death? Very Freudian!P.S. For Downton Abbey fans (every review seems to mention DA), please remember that DA begins when the Titanic sinks in 1912. Carnegie was already elderly when the Titanic sank. This is about a very different era.

Too much romance for my taste, but the historical portion was pretty good!! I couldn’t put it down. Without all the romance, I would’ve given it a 5 star. Andrew Carnegie was a complex individual with his business acumen, philanthropy, and (very interestingly) his late in life marriage to a very young bride. The description of Pittsburg was quite fascinating.

This is a nice story about how Andrew Carnegie changed from a “cut throat” businessman building his fortune, to one of the greatest philanthropists in history. It’s an interesting story that moves quickly. I enjoyed it.

This is a great novella. I really love the House of Night and have read all of the books. I liked the other two novellas (Dragon's Oath & Lenobia's Vow), but I think this was the best so far! You have an idea of what Emily Wheiler faces from the tidbits you get from the House of Night books, but it is nothing like this. There is sadness and a little hope in it. By the end you feel bad for Neferet and you understand her a little more. While you do not condone the way she handles her situation, you understand what made her the way she is. It helps to put into perspective her relationship with Kalona and her replusion for men. I wish we would have more on what happened after she turned into a vampyre. I would like to have read about Neferet's early days before all the evil set in. I was happy with what I got though. The tale that is told is very sad. You feel horrible for Emily and her situation. Cast does a great job of making you feel almost like you were in the story. You can almost smell her father's alcohol breath and sweat. You go with Emily through a major transformation. I thought Camille or Aurthur would be helpful to Emily and her prediciment, but you learn she is truly on her own. No wonder she does things the way she does in the House of Night books! Some other things had to have happened between the first trauma as Emily and the Neferet we love to hate at todays HON. The whole time I was rooting for Neferet to become a vampyre even though I obviously knew that was what was going happen considering she is a main charcter over 120 years later. You can almost put into perspective that around this time (give or take a few years) Lenobia was crossing the water with a boat full of horses, an evil guy, and Martin. While at the same time Dragon (or Bryan) was just becoming a vampyre himself and meeting a beautiful young professor (Anastasia). They are all happening around the same time and these become some of the main chacters and the professors at the House of Night with Zoey and the other students. This is some serious awesome writing. To keep all of the details straight, while adding to the plot after each novel and novella, you have to wonder how the Cast girls do it! I have never found a series that I loved this deeply that has so many books in the series! Usually most authors stop after three or four books, but there is too much to tell about Zoey and her crew to stop at three or four. I am not even sure if twenty would be enough.

I am normally not a big fan of Novella's. Why? Not really sure, they just don't seem to interest me. However, after reading the last book of House of Night: Hidden, I wanted to know more about Neferet and why she became the way she did. Alas, the Novella Neferet's Curse. So, I gave it a shot and I really really enjoyed it. Like I said, I am normally leery of Novella's because they can tend to be a bunch of nonsense information. Well they did an excellent job of writing Neferet's story. I started reading it and literally couldn't put it down. You literally get pulled into the era in which Neferet was born into. The way the society was back then is mesmerizing and scary.I do NOT like to write a bunch of information telling what the story was about and so on and so on, because it beats the purpose of you going and reading the story yourself. And this particular story, I highly recommend you read!! I believe it will help you be a little bit more compassionate with Neferet in "why" she thinks the way she does. However, I still do not condone "what" she does. :)Enjoy this incredible read!!

This was neither more, nor less, than I expected. Bits and pieces of Neferet's past are provided in the House of Night series, so there was not much to build upon other than the circumstances around which those key events took place. If you are a big House of Night fan, I would recommend this novella simply because you will likely find the additional information on Neferet interesting, plus it is a short, easy read. If you are not an avid fan, however, then you could do without this book since it doesn't build upon the primary series, and the novella as a standalone work was only mildly entertaining. I was not siting on the edge of my seat to see what happened next when reading this, and the diary-style writing of the book was a bit of a turn off for me.

Another shining star in the House of Night series. I’m telling you, these novellas are better than the actual books in the main series! Getting to learn about Neferet’s past was extremely eye-opening. I was surprised at her character in the beginning, but seeing how she developed, and the choices she made in reaction to the things that happened to her, I can see exactly why she is the way that she is later on. I was kind of disappointed at first, to see that this was going to be another story about a girl who is taunted by a menacing older man, but as the story progressed I was able to forgive that. It just makes so much sense for Neferet’s overall character. I hope they write more of these novellas, because they’re very enjoyable (but also kind of creepy) to read.

May contain spoilers: This book is both sad and interesting. By reading the House of Night novels, you know a little of Neferet's backstory, but this novella sheds light on what actually happened to make Neferet the monster that you see later in the series. Adult themes are introduced and treated with the respect and sensitivity they deserve. Issues, such as rape, are not walked around, but are plunged through and time period appropriate responses are used. This novella should be read after the book Hidden in the House of Night series.
