DR. JASON ALLEN is the fifth and youngest president of Midwestern Baptist Seminary. He has served as pastor and interim pastor of Southern Baptist churches in Alabama and Kentucky over the past fifteen years. The five solas are an essential aspect of the Protestant church. They are a foundation for the church, the authors say, and life giving for believers. This book covers all five and is a good introduction to them. The historical setting of each sola is given and then what they mean for the Christian life.Each sola is written about by a different author. As is often the case with multiple authors, the writing style and emphasis differs among them. Jason Allen covered Scripture alone. He used 2 Tim. 3:15-17 to show the inspired nature of Scripture and that it is authoritative. I felt he failed to prove that it is our only source of authoritative truth.Jared Wilson wrote about grace alone. He spent quite a bit of time on Scripture alone and faith alone, almost as much as he did on grace alone. I have found Wilson at times hard to follow. He wrote, “Salvation is all of grace. It's not turtles all the way down, it's grace!” (Loc. 363/1201) What? Turtles? I even read the previous paragraphs to understand the turtle reference. Nothing. (I guess I should have read Green's novel to understand Wilson's theology.)Jason Duesing wrote about faith alone. He spent quite a bit of time relating Luther's story, how he became a monk and had a conversion experience. Mathew Barrett wrote on Christ alone. He went into the Roman Catholic view in detail. Owen Strachen wrote on God's glory alone. I found his writing to be the most encouraging and full of application, including a good section on suffering.I recommend this book to Christians who want to know a bit about the solas. The work is not very theologically deep nor very rigorous.I received a complimentary egalley of this book from the publisher. My comments are an independent and honest review.

"Sola" is about the five solas of the Reformation. A different author wrote about each sola, so the writing style varied, but it's more preaching style than academic. While anyone can learn from the essays, several authors talked about how understanding the solas impacts the church so the intended audience may be the church leadership. For each sola, the author talked about what the phrase means, where the principle is found in Scripture, what prompted Luther to include the idea in his writings, and how these truths make a difference in our churches and lives today. It provided a good introduction to the solas, and I'd recommend this book to anyone who is interested in an overview of them and their impact.I received an ebook review copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley.

For over 500 years, Christians have celebrated the Protestant Reformation which was the beginning of a movement to breakaway from the Catholic Church's teaching on justification to embrace the gospel as proclaimed in the Bible. Throughout the years there have been five Latin phrases that have summed up the Reformation that has been taught in the church, which are known as the Five Solas:Sola scriptura-Scripture alone Sola fide-Faith alone Sola gratia-grace alone Solus Christus-Christ alone Soli Dei Gloria-To the glory of God alone Jason Allen says these phrases are "theological declarations, by they come with massive personal and congregational implications...they are the essence of the gospel." This quote comes to the introduction of a book, which Allen has put together along with four other authors, to address the Five Solas and how they apply today. The book is titled, Sola: How the Five Solas Are Still Reforming the Church. Allen is joined by Jared C Wilson, Jason G Duesing, Matthew Barrett, and Owen Strachan. The authors deal with each Sola and their theological distinctives. Allen begins with Sola Scriptura in defining what it is, the history behind it, and its application to the church today. Wilson writes on Sola Gratia and how we see God's grace throughout the Bible. Duesing deals with Sola Fide and gives us the theological background into why we are saved by faith alone. Barrett tackles Solus Christus and how Christ is the only One who can save us. Finally, Strachan addresses Soli Dei Gloria where our salvation is for the glory of God alone and not ourselves. At first, I thought this book was going to be a huge theological book that might take a while to read. This is not the case. Sola is a easy to read book designed to give the reader an introduction to the Reformation and Reformed Theology. This is also a good read when it comes time to reflect on the Reformation later this year.

Illustrations together with photographs and text are combined on a paper surface of a high-quality, and with a very skilled photographic approach. I am an Architect myself, but I needed an extended education, as much as possible, on the subject of cloth manufacturing and the appropriate use of products from the fashion industry, and I also wanted to subscribe to the magazine at some point, which were the main reasons I bought this book. This is a great book as far as photographs and the text, but the material used for the cover is very very low quality and as time goes by, it gets more and more crooked and bent. Not at all what you'd expect from a Rizzoli book.

Dr. Karraa acts as our guide on a journey to a strange and frightening land, calmly taking our hand and teaching us through her research on recollections of women Before, During, and After PPD. She leaves no stone unturned, no aspect ignored or too uncomfortable to address, and writing with the highest order of respect and admiration for her participants, whose (too often ignored) thoughts and feelings finally have a place.To understand PPD, one must not only be able to identify it, but to understand the way it changes women's lives. Most people don't overlook this, don't understand this or even think about it--I certainly didn't. This book taught me the transformative role that PPD plays in the lives of women, in ways I would not have even guessed.As a RN, I was greatly embarrassed by the documented accounts of how poorly health professionals of all kinds dealt with women who were so gravely struggling. One quote that stood out for me, in reference to a heartbreaking healthcare worker fail, was "Why didn't she ever just look into my eyes & say 'How are you?'"That's what this book was all about. Great book!

Thank you, Walker Karraa, PhD, for shedding light on and sharing real women's stories of postpartum depression. Women's authentic experience of pregnancy and motherhood must be heard. Honestly, at times I found this ultimately hopeful book difficult to read, for it kept bringing back memories of my own traumatic birth experience, which I will spare you here (suffice it to say, I remember the pain quite well). Unlike many of the women interviewed by Dr. Walker, I had been under treatment for depression for almost 20 years before I became a mother. The family practitioner who delivered my son was the same physician who prescribed my antidepressants. Plus, her husband was a psychiatrist. They kept me in the hospital longer than the other mothers, and though they didn't say so, I was pretty sure it was because they were assessing me for PPD given my history - for that I am thankful.

Â The result is, I hope, going to help raise the bar and improve the tone of discourse on the causes of autism. Â When only part of the science is selected to support a pre-conceived notion during the formation of public policy, everyone suffers from the impoverishment of knowledge. This poverty of comprehension has profound impact on a growing number of Americans and people around the world. In keeping with my personal view that it is during the time of deepest despair that we are mathematically entitled to the largest possible amount of hope, I do hope that the knowledge I have brought forward will help drive forward key changes in research and in medical practice.

This November 2016 release is a complete paradigm shift the likes of which I've never seen. After 4 years of research on autism, genetics, immunity and disease, attempting to understand and treat my son's autism, this one book brings it all together. All of the factors contributing to this epidemic are represented here. Documented, assimilated, translated and notated by a brilliant-minded scientist. James Lyons-Weiler's background in Molecular Biology, Molecular Evolution, Plant Biology, Biogeography, and Paleontology, and Population Ecology, Classical and Molecular Cytogenetics, Conservation Biology, Population Genetics, and Experimental Design has apparently uniquely qualified him to write this definitive work. It does NOT provide the easy answers, but all the right questions, implication and indictment.On a little reading binge, this is my 14th book in the last 2 months relating to autism, infectious disease, immunology... the history and politics. But, this ONE book reveals a depth of study that makes most others look like they're in the sandbox eating bugs. The devil is truly in the details.Even the most exceptional scientific minds will be challenged to assimilate the depth and breadth of this examination in translational research. James Lyons-Weiler has written THE MOST IMPORTANT BOOK IN PEDIATRICS right now and for the foreseeable future. I am only half way in as I read and re-read sections trying to wrap my head around his interpretation of over 3,000 peer reviewed studies. A warning to those without a high capacity for complex scientific analysis, it may not be the first book you should read in understanding the complexity of the 'debate' on autism. I would suggest 'Age of Autism' by Dan Olmsted and 'Dissolving Illusions' by Dr. Suzanne Humphries.I'd seen VAXXED and knew very well the story of Dr. Andy Wakefield's crucifixion by the medical community and media. So much vitriol over a little study suggesting a possible link between a vaccine and immune system disregulation. Where are we as a society, as a scientific community, if we attack a person who publishes a study recommending more research on the issue (as nearly EVERY scientific paper does). Frankly, I thought the movie VAXXED barely scraped the iceberg on the possible link between vaccines and autism. You'd be better served by first watching the hundreds of testimonials being captured and posted on YouTube as part of the VAXXED bus tour. This is perhaps THE MOST IMPORTANT story in medicine right now. The public needs to know whether vaccines are safe for each and every individual. A vaccine schedule that has accelerated from 12 to 72 vaccines in the last 30 years without any collective research as to the possible effects of not just Mercury and aluminum, not just the additives like polysorbate 80 and mono sodium glutamate, but the viral strains themselves. Presuming viruses as static entities, unable to mutate into more dangerous and virulent strains denies all we know and have learned about infectious disease in the last 300 years. Finally, Dr. Paul Offit, an apostle of the darkest nature, who has done more damage to scientific discovery and public health than any medical professional in history, who states that you can safely have 10,000 vaccines on the same day (revised from his original 'scientific' estimate of 100,000), I say 'TRY IT YOURSELF'!

I had the opportunity to read the manuscript as well as an advanced copy of this revolutionary book. Except in extremely rare cases, genes alone are not to blame. Without exposure to environmental assaults and toxins, the genes involved in the majority of cases would not have led to autism. The autism epidemic is man made.Citing more than a thousand studies, CAUSES holds nothing back, defying political and corporate pressures to reveal the truth by showing HOW environmental exposures can and do cause autism. This book needs to be read by parents, doctors, pediatricians, politicians, and journalists, and immediate action must be taken to end the epidemic.

Finally an unbiased review of the wealth of science out there with a purpose:to begin solving the epidemic that is autism. I appreciated the approach of looking at both the genetic and environmental causes of autism and understanding that while there are clearly very susceptible individuals, once a critical load of "environment" is reached, the % of people susceptible becomes much greater. It is why we have gone from 4.5/10000 to 1/45 in less than 3 decades, even considering diagnosis adjustments. Genetic epidemics do not happen. We have to address this for the greater good and I implore all scientists and medical professionals to jump on board and be a part of the path to solving this problem.

This is the most complete book I have found on the causes of autism. I appreciate that the author referenced 1,000 studies. He meets the vaccine problem squarely showing that there are other problems that increase the risk of autism, but the vaccine issue pushes many over the edge. This book is dense and not light reading. It is so well written, though, that it is readable. This is an important work and I'm grateful to the author for putting this together.

This book uses published science to demolish the irresponsible conclusion that vaccines are unequivocally safe for all and don't cause autism. In addition, the book explores the multitude of genetic and environmental factors that can send one child into autism while others appear unscathed by similar exposures. The book is very heavy on scientific terminology and concepts and may be discouraging for those without a strong science background. However, if you are willing to learn some of the abbreviations used as well as some classification concepts related to autism you are well on your way to learning a great deal from this book. I would highly recommend this book for professionals who are interested in the actual research on the subject of autism as well as parents who want truthful information about vaccination, environment and autism.
