Gr. 7-12. "I didn't want to be defiant. I wanted to be in the system that I was walking away from, but I didn't know how to get in." Many teens will see themselves in Myers' account of his troubled coming-of-age, especially since he offers no pat solutions. He doesn't analyze or laugh at his youth from an adult perspective, and he doesn't overdramatize his childhood self. He remembers how he felt: detached, hurt, lonely, ashamed, a failure. He loved his Harlem neighborhood, but it was hard being black and poor and a reader, especially since moving into a world of books isolated him from those around him. He was big and physically aggressive, quick to get angry and punch kids who laughed at his speech defect. He was always in trouble at school and often truant. In fact, he dropped out of high school, read and wrote alone, and narrowly escaped jail. The narrative is sometimes rambling and repetitive, and sometimes abstract: for example, Myers just touches on his searing discovery that his stepfather couldn't read. The most beautiful writing is about Mama: how she taught him to read, sharing True Romance magazines. He still feels ashamed about how he hurt her: "Later when I had learned to use words better, I lost my ability to speak so freely with Mama." Though this book would jump periodically from one event in his life to some other event seemingly without a smooth transition, it certainly made me feel his angst and struggles trying to make sense of himself in his world in Harlem and in the world outside Harlem. I think this book would be good for youngsters who feel isolated and are struggling to figure out who they are, where they're going and what it might take to get there.
School required reading for my 8th grader. She liked the book and said she was glad this was a part of the summer reading this year. It kept her interest.
I am a former elementary teacher and school librarian who has been reading Walter Dean Myers books for years. In his usual conversational manner Walter Dean Myers writes about his journey to become one of the best, most respected, and award-winning children's book writers. He explains his struggles growing up in Harlem, NY, and how certain people in his life had positive effects to motivate him to become a writer. However, along the way he never thought he could earn a living from writing or become a famous writer for children, mainly boys. Probably the biggest motivation in Walter's life was READING an assortment of FICTION and NONFICTION books, so that he knew there could be a life for him beyond the difficult life he was experiencing. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and his in-depth evaluations about where he had come from and what he needed to do to succeed. This INSPIRATIONAL book should be published in hardcover and be in every elementary, middle-school, and high school library for librarians to give to kids who are struggling through hardships within their family and at school. Kids will learn to never give up, because EVERY ONE of THEM can succeed in life. After all Walter Dean Myer did not finish high school. But he did what one teacher advised him to do, and that was to "NEVER STOP WRITING." As Walter said on page 200 of BAD BOY, "My reading ability led me to books, which led me to ideas, which led me to more books and more ideas. The slow dance through the ideas led me to writing." However, Walter's becoming a writer could also lead SAM, TANISHA, JUSTIN, CHELSEA, EUGENE, LA TOYA, ALBERT, KRISSY, and BARACK to become an attorney, doctor, vetrinarian, mechanic, builder, successful businessman, or president of the United States, Liberia, or another country! Our kids need encouragement and BOOKS, especially biographies and autobiographies, not criticism and punishment for minor offenses. Everyone read BAD BOY! This book is a good read for teens. It flows well. It examines all of the insecurities that young people experience while learning to think for themselves. The story,which covers Myer's early life, shows how a young man can make the most of his strengths, in spite of setbacks. I would receommend this book for teens who are seeking answers to the challenges in their lives.
My son absolutely loves this book and how good its quality is especially since he needs it for school and its a pretty good story

This book might be good for a second grader. An adult friend of mine read it and said he loved it. I thought it was too young for me.
