NICE BOOK

There are reference books like Fleming's Molecular Orbitals and Organic Chemical Reactions that gives a complete presentation of orbital interactions and professional monographs like the one by Deslongchamp's Stereoelectronic Effects in Organic Chemistry that gives a large number of examples from the literature. This slim volume by Kirby is neither of those. I first encountered this as a supplemental recommended text for sophomore organic chemistry at Harvard, where the curriculum emphasizes thinking about reactions in frontier orbital terms. I read it from cover to cover back then in a matter of days, but the well chosen examples left a deep impression on me for many years to come -- it helped me to think about molecules and transition states by always being aware of the orbitals involved and looking for stabilizing or destabilizing interactions as (possible) explanations for chemical phenomena.If you've never thought about chemistry in these terms, and you need to start doing so for an intermediate/advanced class, I recommend this book as the place to start. Even though it is woefully incomplete and somewhat non-rigorous at times, it gets to the essence of things expediently by quickly laying the ground rules for MO theory in the first chapter (without math) and then spending the rest of the book showing classic cases where orbital effects control the course of a reaction and/or determines molecular geometry. These examples give you a "feel" for how stereoelectronic arguments in organic chemistry typically work.

In the physical organic chemistry course I have been taking, we have been talking all about stereoelectronic effects and molecular orbitals. I was having trouble with frontier molecular orbital theory as it relates to stereoelectronic effects and was not finding helpful explanations in other texts I was consulting. A friend recommended I read Kirby, and I am so glad she did. Kirby offers in-depth explanations of stereoelectronic phenomena in a useful and understandable manner. This is a great addition to any organic chemist's library.

Kirby's Stereoelectronic effects provides a good introduction to the fundamentals of molecular orbital interactions. Makes a nice supplement to advanced organic chemistry texts that are deficient in this area
