About the Author

Gary Gates is a Dutchman from Lebanon County, Pennsylvania, where all the baloney comes from. People know where he is from when he opens his mouth.Gary is a performer, having appeared hundreds of times at festivals, fairs, colleges, libraries, corporation banquets, comedy clubs, writers groups, resorts, and on radio and TV. His Pennsylvania Dutch humor is riotous fun, sweet enough for family entertainment, yet salty enough to keep adults and children in stitches. He loves performing and celebrating his unique heritage with his fellow Dutchmen, and sharing it with non-Dutchmen, whose response to his show has been overwhelmingly hysterical. Some people have declared him the new Professor Schnitzel, even the Mark Twain of Pennsylvania Dutch country. Even more people simply call him the best windbag they ever heard.

This is not a serious book on language. It just pokes fun at the "dutchie" accent that is familiar to us residents of south central PA. As one who puts a great deal of value on proper grammar, I have to take it in small doses. But I have enjoyed it, as many of the pronunciations are quite amusing!

FUNNY gift for a Dutch-American!

Very entertaining if you grew up in the PA Dutch area!

I suppose that some people are just born without funny bones. I liked the book and have heard most of what is said in the colloquial dialect around this part of Pennsylvania. Maybe it is an inside joke. Really don't care, but I thought that it was lots of fun. I'm looking forward to getting the second volume.

I bought this without reading the description carefully enough. I was looking for a book of the Pennsylvania Dutch words and phrases that I've been accustomed to hearing during my lifetime residence in PA. This book is a list of (supposedly funny) mispronunciations. An example: Hunkrey: famished; starved.Despite my error in selecting this book, which is self-described as an introduction to the PA Dutch accent, I can hardly imagine anyone of even average intelligence enjoying it. Sorry.

As some have noted, this is a piece of humor. I can verify that. I met Gary many years ago, when the book first came out and can assure any who have any doubts that he is not trying to write a dictionary, document language in a scholarly way, or belittle people who speak English with a PA Dutch (German) accent. The intent of the book is to have a bit of nostalgic fun. BTW, it is NOT a book specifically about the Amish, who seem in recent years to be the stereotypical PA Dutch. So, don't expect manufactured attempts at rustic quaintness. The humor is mostly an inside joke for those who are familiar with the local SE PA English of years gone by, with its German influenced intonation and grammar. If you didn't grow up around it, you may have a hard time appreciating it.

I laughed out loud with each turn of the page! This book is filled with all the words, phrases and "mispronunciations" I grew up with in PA! I live in Colorado now, and when I put on the PA Dutch accent, using the unique words and phrases, my friends laugh in disbelief. Now I have this book to prove it!

Great book. Very entertaining. Brought back many great memories of my grandparents who were very PA Dutch. It's fun to see just how much my vocabulary was influenced by Pennsylvania Dutch.
