Eleven on Top felt a little different to me than the other Stephanie Plum books so far. Yes, Stephanie is stuck in the Ranger/Joe triangle and yes, she still has more than a few issues in her life and yes, she still hates guns. It actually felt to me like the character was growing somewhat.She quit her bounty hunter job and was fired from not one, but two new jobs and burnt down the third. OK, so she didn't actually do the burning (but then again, how many times did she actually do the burning and exploding in her career?) but you get my drift.She is getting threats from an unknown source and though she bumbles her way in the bounty hunter business she has a great sense of intuition. Unfortunately the law requires evidence, not hunches. So, Stephanie accepts a research job with Rangeman. This will keep her somewhat safe and will give her the resources needed to find the culprit(s) responsible for her newest threat.I had the feeling that her character was actually being somewhat responsible even if she still has the immature tendencies to fight Joe tooth and nail when he's trying to protect her. I must say though that sometimes I can't blame her. Joe doesn't ask or suggest, he tells and almost bullies and then Stephanie reacts. Now most of us would probably tell him he' being a neanderthal and really needs to change his tactics (though something tells me he wouldn't pay much attention), but that would take the fun out of the story, right?I've seen some reviews that read they don't like the Joe/Stephanie/Ranger triangle (though she's going to have to choose sooner or later, she isn't getting any younger), or that Stephanie hasn't gotten much better at her bounty hunter job. However, the Stephanie Plum books are not meant to be deep, intellectual mystery thrillers. They are purely entertainment. Taken in that context, I find they are great reads and I can't help but to enjoy them. The plot in each book are unique enough to keep me from becoming bored.

I have read all the Stephanie Plums in order up through this one (15). I think this is the funniest I have read to date. I promise you, I would never loan Stephanie my car. In this Ranger finds out the hard way as she goes to work part time for Rangeman Security and Ranger helps her catch up on her skips. Lula sees a famous TV chef get beheaded on the street and spends the book trying to avoid being killed by the culprits. Plus Lula is trying to win a bar-be-que grill off which pays big money and is tied into the murder. Rangerman clients are being burglarized by someone who knows the security pad codes and employees are being scrutinized to see if it is an in house breach, opening the job opportunity for Stephanie to help. Just the funniest book I have read in a long time.

Actually, I give it 4-1/2 stars, because, the main character's schtick of being such a klutz with every bounty apprehension; this has gotten stale as a way to be humorous. After a couple of years of bounty work, the author should have acknowledged that this character would have flawless apprehension techniques. But each book, 1 through 11, continues to be fun entertaining murder mysteries, that get solved in a variety of ways. I plan to read all of the books in this series, including #24 out this fall (2017).

Okay, it's not great literature, but I never tire of Stephanie Plum's hilarious escapades. # 15 ranks high on the list of outrageous adventures. This time everything's bursting into flames. Stephanie manages to torch Ranger's Porsche Cayenne not once but twice, get doused with red paint, her apartment is firebombed, Lula's Firebird explodes, and barbeque sauce seems to rain from heaven throughout the book. Lula organizes a team for a barbecue contest after she witnesses the decapitation of a famous chef. She's determined to win the cook-off prize, but the various concoctions she creates do more internal damage than palate pleasing.Although currently off men after a break-up with Morelli, the long-running battle for Stephanie's heart continues. Who will she choose, Morelli or Ranger? By book 15, it appears that Morelli is gaining ground. Lots of sexual tension, without anything really gross. I appreciate that.Evanovich's work walks the tightrope between bawdy and innocent prose, and sometimes the humor seems a bit sophomoric. Still, she manages to keep everything fun. I would recommend this book.

The Stephanie Plum series is my favorite. I love her! Stephanie gives up being a bounty hunter in this book, thinking life would be much simpler. She's tired of the bad guys. A ghost from the past has other ideas. Ranger to the rescue in more ways than one! 😎This is the book where the relationship between Stephanie and Ranger deepens. The growth between these two characters is amazing. Ranger starts to open up about his life and his feelings for Stephanie.

Stephanie Plum the bounty hunter has been stalked by crazed killers, taunted by naked men, firebombed, shot at, cussed at, chased by humping dogs, rolled in garbage and dog diarrhea not to mention she now has an unidentifiable glob of goo in her hair after apprehending Melon-head Sporky. This was the last straw for her, it is time to quit being a bounty hunter and get a regular job. She is hired at the button factory only to be fired her first day. The second job is at Kan Klean dry cleaners it too only lasts a couple of days before Mama Macaroni is blown up trying to leave in Stephanies Car. Then she gets a job a fast-food chicken place it goes up in flames after a possible stalker by the name of Spiro Stiva hands her a package that could be a bomb. Four regular guys leave on the same day and end up missing. How is all this connected with her stalker? Greatstory, lots of laughs.

"What if" scenarios are often suspect. They are sometimes thinly veiled tales of the gospel according to the author, taking on the claustrophobic air of a personal fantasia that can't be shared. Such is not the case with Philip Roth's tour de force, The Plot Against America. It is a credible, fully-realized picture of what could happen anywhere, at any time, if the right people and circumstances come together. The Plot Against America explores a wholly imagined thesis and sees it through to the end: Charles A. Lindbergh defeats FDR for the Presidency in 1940. Lindbergh, the "Lone Eagle," captured the country's imagination by his solo Atlantic crossing in 1927 in the monoplane, Spirit of St. Louis, then had the country's sympathy upon the kidnapping and murder of his young son. He was a true American hero: brave, modest, handsome, a patriot. According to some reliable sources, he was also a rabid isolationist, Nazi sympathizer, and a crypto-fascist. It is these latter attributes of Lindbergh that inform the novel. The story is framed in Roth's own family history: the family flat in Weequahic, the neighbors, his parents, Bess and Herman, his brother, Sandy and seven-year-old Philip. Jewishness is always the scrim through which Roth examines American contemporary culture. His detractors say that he sees persecution everywhere, that he is vigilant in "Keeping faith with the certainty of Jewish travail"; his less severe critics might cavil about his portrayal of Jewish mothers and his sexual obsession, but generally give him good marks, and his fans read every word he writes and heap honors upon him. This novel will engage and satisfy every camp. "Fear presides over these memories, a perpetual fear. Of course, no childhood is without its terrors, yet I wonder if I would have been a less frightened boy if Lindbergh hadn't been president or if I hadn't been the offspring of Jews." This is the opening paragraph of the book, which sets the stage and tone for all that follows. Fear is palpable throughout; fear of things both real and imagined. A central event of the novel is the relocation effort made through the Office of American Absorption, a government program whereby Jews would be placed, family by family, across the nation, thereby breaking up their neighborhoods--ghettos--and removing them from each other and from any kind of ethnic solidarity. The impact this edict has on Philip and all around him is horrific and life-changing. Throughout the novel, Roth interweaves historical names such as Walter Winchell, who tries to run against Lindbergh. The twist at the end is more than surprising--it is positively ingenious. Roth has written a magnificent novel, arguably his best work in a long time. It is tempting to equate his scenario with current events, but resist, resist. The novel is, in addition, a moving family drama, in which Philip's fiercely ethical father, Herman, finds himself unable to protect his loved ones, and a family schism develops between those who understand the eventual outcome of Lindbergh's policies and those who are co-opted into abetting their own potential destruction. Many episodes are touching and hilarious: young Philip experiences the usual fears and misapprehensions of a pre-adolescent; locks himself into a neighbor's bathroom; gets into dangerous mischief with a friend; watches his cousin masturbating with no comprehension of the act. In the balance of personal, domestic and national events, the novel is one of Roth's most deft creations, and if the lollapalooza of an ending is bizarre with its revisionist theory about the motives behind Lindbergh's anti-Semitism, it's the subtext about what can happen when government limits religious liberties in the name of the national interest that gives the novel moral authority. Philip Roth may have written this book back in 2004, and it may be about an alternate rendering of American history in the early 1940's that found the pro-Nazi Charles Lindbergh in the White House instead of FDR, but every American who cares about the future of this nation and its democracy should be acutely aware of the possibilities posed in this book.How Adolph Hitler managed to seduce the nation that produced so geniuses like Goethe and Beethoven always baffled me. I could not fathom why the Nazis found it worth their while to capture and kill my blind old great-grandmother in their concentration camp. A writer myself, I wrote my own novel about the era, and I went to a couple of those camps (Dachau and Buchenwald) and let the horror of them sear my soul so that I would never forget, nor would I allow anyone else, who let me, forget. And so I highly recommend this work by Philip Roth--who happens to be a damned great writer as well as a passionate advocate against fascism.

I read The Plot Against America for a book group discussion we had on April 9. Considering current events an important part of our discussion concerned the interesting similarities between the fictional presidential administration and our actual current presidential administration - with which we found many. Certainly our real president would hop around in his plane the same as Charles Lindbergh though Lindbergh flew himself while today the plane is owned - but the overall impact on waiting crowds seems the same. Also the terse not quite diplomatic jargon seems similar. But most of the discussion concerned having a president that seemed okay or even encouraging to people who discriminated against other US citizens because of their race or religion applied pretty fairly - though today we might change the religion somewhat to non-Christian religions in general. There were also some frustrations with a common Rothian theme associated with individual sexual behaviors of young men, though in this one it was through the eyes of one young enough not to know what that was. There was also the interest in how well Roth seems to communicate so clearly that you can easily get a sense of what is happening. Though also occasionally things seem confusing. We were all concerned about how fact and fiction seemed to blend so well that we felt confused about whether or not specific things were historical or not or both. How much of perceived prejudice is in the imagination of the perceiver? But also how striking it seemed that a book over ten years ago could predict so many events now happening.Comment Comment | Permalink

This is a fascinating work of counterfactual historical fiction. It is extremely realistic, and if one didn't know the actual history one could be fooled by the novel's excellent mimesis (imitation) of the historical context it portrays. The novel is rich with details and is bursting with juicy tidbits. Philip Roth is one of the best writers of modern American literature. This novel should be of particular interest to Jews, as it portrays a hypothetical fascist America. (For a similar book, see It Can't Happen Here (Signet Classics).) The Plot Against America is also somewhat of a political thriller, and the novel's portrayal of the presidency definitely carries contemporary relevance, considering the 2016 election. Those who are fascinated by presidential threats/assassinations and the line of succession and will have their appetites whetted. I read The Plot Against America for a literature course, but it's so enjoyable that I would've read it even if I didn't have to.

Philip Roth is one of my favorite authors. Interested in the human condition, the Jewish-American condition, and the male condition, his books each offer a unique exploration into a compelling topic with universal themes.The genius about this book in particular is how Roth examines the issue of America "selling out" to Hitler from many plausible yet conflicting viewpoints. From the indignant father to the quietly prideful mother, to the damaged orphan nephew to the lonely aunt to the ever curious boy, anti-semitic events are presented, described, experienced and analyzed with clearly developed voices that reach out from the 1940's to touch our hearts today, in the age of Internet-based news and every changing political grounds.I found this book to be very rewarding, both from a literary and a plot standpoint. The story arc progresses steadily until the last 15% of the book, where the pace increases to frenetic, confrontation leaps out on every page, and conflicting viewpoints are resolved.I highly recommend!

I wanted to love this, I was very moved after Roth's death, and while this book certainly shows off Roth's writing ability, I think it also shows that he was running out of steam and writing plots instead of character development - not that there's anything wrong with THAT, but it's just less interesting. Also, I think Roth had a good idea but wrote so much detail about his neighborhood and other nostalgia that it sometimes borders on tedious. That being said, this is a page turner and, based on current events, well worth reading.Also, as others have noted, the ending feels way rushed.
